NRMP Match Errors

I am an intern who was the victim of a NRMP mistake. They used the incorrect Rank order list in my match. When I informed them of this they basically told me too bad. I'm interested in hearing from other residents who had problems with the NRMP. I'm sure there are more of us out there. They need to be held accountable.

Hello -- my name is Jeffrey Huo, a MD/PhD student at U. Michigan, and I'm interested in the details of your story; not just because, like every other medical student, I have a stake in the Match: but because, from 1999 to 2004, I was one of the medical student members of the NRMP's Board of Directors.

During my term on the Board, lots of people came to me with problems, and I did my best to try to help them. Sometimes their issues led to new ideas on how to change things. In some cases, the Match was able to correct the problems altogether before Match Day (which, regrettably, isn't possible in your case.) Sometimes, unfortunately, the problem was because a program director or an applicant didn't follow an instruction they signed off on as having agreed to, and there wasn't anything the NRMP could do. And everything in between.

I reached the term limits on my service, but I still work actively with the med students who succeeded me on the Board of the NRMP. In fact, I'm helping work on stuff right now. And I'm interested in hearing your story.

I know you're probably wondering if I'm for real -- google for me, "Jeffrey Huo", and you should be able to find my contact information: call NRMP headquarters, if you'd like, to confirm I used to be a director. And if you think I might be able to help, contact me -- jeffshuo at umich dot edu. Because, ultimately, the point of a Board is to hold accountability to the rules everyone agreed to -- the organization, the program directors, and the applicants. Everybody knows the rules, the deadlines, and the procedures. It's the Board's job, ultimately, to see to it that everyone lives up to that which they agreed. That's, for lack of better words, our job.
